Bamboo Sushi Rolling Mat – How to Use it

Bamboo sushi rolling mats are essential for making delicious sushi at home. This mat’s simple design allows you to roll your sushi with ease and precision.

Here’s how to use a bamboo rolling mat if you’re a beginner or just want to improve your technique.

1. Gather Your Ingredients

Be sure to have all ingredients at hand before you begin rolling. It’s usually sushi rice, nori, fresh fish, vegetables and sauces. You can also keep a bowl of water near you to moisten your fingers and stop the rice from sticking.

2. Sushi Rice: Prepare it

The perfect sushi rice is essential for the perfect roll. The rice should be rinsed until it runs clear. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package. Season the rice with sugar, salt, and rice vinegar while it is still warm. Let the rice cool down to room temperature.

3. How to Install Your Bamboo Mat

The slats should run horizontally. Place the nori sheet, shiny side up, on top of the mat. Make sure it covers two-thirds or more of the mat. Leave space at the top to seal the roll.

4. Add the Rice and Fillings

To prevent the rice from sticking to your hands, wet them. Then, grab a handful and spread it evenly over the nori. Leave about 1 inch at the top. Gently but firmly press the rice into place. Add your fillings in a horizontal line across the middle of the rice.

5. Start Rolling

Rolling sushi is as simple as lifting the mat and folding it over the fillings. Tuck the nori around the fillings. The mat can be used to guide your roll. Apply gentle pressure and shape it into a cylindrical shape. Continue rolling the nori until you reach its exposed edge.

6. Seal the Roll

Seal the nori roll by moistening the exposed edge with water. Roll it up to seal the roll. Let the roll rest for a couple of minutes before cutting.

7. Slice and Serve

Cut the sushi roll using a sharp knife into bite-sized chunks. To ensure that the edges are clean, wet the knife in between each cut. Serve the pieces with wasabi, soy sauce, and pickled ginger.
